Small urban farms, known in Spanish as Organoponicos, are a vital source of affordable food for many Cubans - filling gaps in the government ration system, or during food shortages.

Plots are often small, but grow a wide variety of foods, and typically have a small farm stand where they sell their produce. These farms stands also work to help educate local populations on good nutrition, and the importance of locally grown foods.
